Lane Departure: The Technology Making Driving Safer

Lane departure technology, also known as lane departure alert, is increasingly gaining popularity among drivers as a helpful driving aid. Utilizing sensors and cameras, lane departure technology alerts drivers when the vehicle begins to stray from the lane markers on the road.

According to the iihs, “lane departure warning lowers rates of single-vehicle, sideswipe and head-on crashes of all severities by 11 percent and lowers the rates of injury crashes of the same types by 21 percent.”

The alerts may take different forms depending on the make and model of the car, ranging from gentle vibrations of the steering wheel to audible tones and even visual warnings displayed on dashboards. As lane departure alert systems become more prevalent, they are helping make drivers more aware of their surroundings while driving and reduce lane change related accidents significantly.
